This is American Cruise Line's S.S. Independence, an old 1950s era cruise ship that sailed inter-island cruises from the mid 1980s to about 1992. This photo was taken around 1988 before her funnels were painted green. Also in this picture if you look at the back of the ship, you will see a tiny piece of her sister ship, the S.S. Constitution. American Cruise Line went bankrupt in the 1990s and the 2 ships were pulled out of service. The Independence was taken to the U.S. mainland where she is sitting in some old scrapyard rusting away. Found these old pictures that I shot on the Big Island in 1995. This is the Kohala area on the northern side of the Big Island of Hawaii. This statue to King Kamehameha I is the original work that was supposed to be erected in Honolulu. On its way to Hawaii in the late 1800s, the ship upon which this statue was on, sunk. Another statue was commissioned and that one made it to Honolulu where it stands today.
