SS Independence: Old Cruise Ship
This is American Cruise Line's S.S. Independence, an old 1950s era cruise ship that sailed inter-island cruises from the mid 1980s to about 1992. This photo was taken around 1988 before her funnels were painted green. Also in this picture if you look at the back of the ship, you will see a tiny piece of her sister ship, the S.S. Constitution. American Cruise Line went bankrupt in the 1990s and the 2 ships were pulled out of service. The Independence was taken to the U.S. mainland where she is sitting in some old scrapyard rusting away. The Constitution was sold to a firm in East Asia where she was to be scrapped. She was towed from Hawaii across the Pacific but never made it to her destination. Instead the old lady decided to just sink in the Pacific, and she did! Photo taken with Minolta XD5, scanned to jpg.
